Hyper Crush at Lumen: 9/19/2008

The move and beginning of school caused a severe hiatus, but with the attendance of 3 awesome shows and a plethora of more to come I'm coming back!

To start, HYPER CRUSH came to Chicago!!! I could not express my excitement for this event enough and managed to gather a group to come with me to dance around to this LA-based group. In a festive spirit we drank fitting spirits: vodka and Crush. Cheesy? Absolutely! Delicious? Of course !

While I got the feeling that a lot of the crowd had not been blasting Hyper Crush in the several days leading up to their show at Lumen as I had been, the half that decided to step away from the bar and rock their free glow sticks with pride, all the while dancing like maniacs, had a great time! When the show culminated with 'The Arcade' I'm pretty sure I almost fell off of the table I was standing on several times. When dancing on elevated surfaces, one most remember to watch the edge... That aside, the group was super fun live and really friendly.

Here are pics I got with them:
"Preston makes the beat drop" ... with a keytar

"Holly baby"...
"They call [him] Donny"...

Check out their web site for "The Arcade" video and gear. While I'm a little put off that Audrina on The Hills was rocking a Hyper Crush T-shirt in a more recent episode, I shouldn't hate on the fact that they're getting publicity...

"How Google Earth Helped Win A Gold Medal"

Techcrunch.com always has interesting posts, but I felt this one would be interesting for not only tech lovers (such as myself) but others who read my posts as well. Who's possibly tired of hearing about the Olympics and how America rocks? I know I'm not...

Go America!

Red Bull Flugtag!

That's right! It's that time of year when many hopefuls pour their blood, sweat, and tears into a flying contraption in which to launch themselves off of a ramp into a body of water in the hopes of 'flying' the furthest. The body of water this year: Lake Michigan! I will definitely be hitting up North Ave. beach to watch people smash themselves up and down the lake for my own personal enjoyment.

The details are here.

Hopefully I'll be able to post some good pictures, or just pics of my happy debauchery from that pleasant Saturday afternoon...

The Dark Side of the Zodiac

While this link is old, it has just crossed my path thanks to a friend and is too funny not to share. Look past the harsh words and realize how often everyone hears the good things about their zodiac sign, never the dark side...

And if that doesn't make you feel better this excerpt from my dark side will:
"The scorpio darkside is darker than the rest, almost out of the dark into a whole other dimension, a kind of soul-sucking meta-dark, where suddenly the words "evil" and "mastermind" seem inadequate. There is no sin, depravity, perversion, cruelty, degradation or villainy they wouldn't consider."

It just gets better... Check 'em out! There's apparently a whole book delving into more detail, I definitely might buy it for my coffee table...

DJ Barletta and his "wom wom" sound

While I am in the midst of a music rut I decided to sift through blogs/Myspace/anything to find some new tracks and came across DJ Barletta. Blogs and music lovers are buzzing about his rmx of Lil Wayne's Lollipop so I checked it out. Had someone asked me 2 days ago if I thought anyone could revive the overplayed tune I would have said no, but Barletta proved me wrong. I'm taking Lil Wayne's track off the shelf for one more ride... but only if it's Barletta's rmx.

Some Chicagoland DJs better snatch this track up from him and play it in the city... I want to hear it while I'm out!

Check out his Myspace page where he labels his sound as "wom wom" and listen to some of his other mixes. I'm a fan of his Hi Top Fade Remix as well.

I totally want to check this out... I would have way too much fun! If anyone sees these please report back!

Anti-Piracy Dog Passes On

I was definitely unaware of the fact that anti-piracy dogs existed (they sniff out pirated DVDs I guess...)

That aside, one of them passed away in Malaysia (poor ol' Manny was a gift from the Motion Picture Association of America and hadn't adjusted to his new home).

Even though there are bounties out on dogs like Manny who round up millions of dollars worth of counterfeit DVDs each year, "foul play is not thought to be responsible for Manny's demise." And just in case you thought you were confused, yes- I did say there are people willing to pay 10's of thousands of dollars to kill these poor dogs.

R.I.P Manny (the blonde dog in the picture)

Technology + Luxury= Fabulous

The Gresso White Diamonds luxury mobile phone is an interesting piece of technology.

via Gizmag
While it is hard to see in the picture, each of the keys on the phone dons a diamond rendering the phone somewhere between $14,000 and $52,000! I know I enjoy fabulous things but if I'm getting a diamond encrusted phone I want something that pops a bit more. Maybe it's just another one of those items you have to see in person to really experience...

Dear Pierre Hardy, I love you!

This is why:
A) It sucks to have a real job and have to pay for your own things

and

B) I will use what little pay check I have to pay for shoes

These shoes are so funky and cute I can totally look past the fact that they aren't my normal 4 inch heel and buy these.

The only dilemma: Do I have enough money? I seem to think I do, and I guess that's all that really matters. You can't stand between a girl and a hot pair of shoes... it's just a universal constant we all need to accept.

Flippin' A!

I love the idea of a video recorder that is small and plugs right into my laptop via USB: Enter Flip Video. It's a small video recording device that caught my eye with a cute tag line "What will you see today?" While I do not see that much action in and around my neck of the woods, I am still considering this item for vacationing and capturing general summertime debauchery.

It runs on AA batteries (Up to 6.5 hours with "2 x AA Energizer® e2® batteries"), takes up to 60min of footage (assuming you purchase the 2G one), and can come in a darling white and bright pink combo... although black might be more tasteful... I'm not 12 anymore.

LifeStraw

For those that do not know, I am 1/4 Congolese (you probably first learned about the country in grammar school with its previous name 'Zaire') and I am always interested in ways to help developing nations. My sister came across this device and I had to share.

Aside from its ability to provide water for a family for up to 2 years (based on 20L of water consumption a day) the LifeStraw claims to remove 99.99% of waterborne bacteria, viruses, and parasites. If this actually works, I am a huge fan. If it doesn't, I am a fan of the intent and I hope they can perfect it soon.

Sorry about the lack of posts. I graduated college, went to North Carolina, and started my new job as an Associate Producer on a video game all in the past few days so once my life has calmed a bit I'll be back.

On an unrelated note- I'm going to the Chicago Fire game this Saturday so hopefully I'll get some good pictures there to post!

Digitalism

Last night I was introduced to Digitalism, a German duo with a sound that can be described as Electronica/Indie. Their latest release "Idealism" (released in May of 2007) has just made its way into my sound library, and just in time for the summer. I will definitely be jamming out to this album to get hyped up and to just enjoy a generally good mood- check it out!

Strange USB Drives

After my roommate informed me about this crazy USB drive (be sure to check out the video!):

It just reminded me how out there Japan really is. You may remember my post on the Super Pii Pii Brothers... I'm beginning to wonder if I need to start a new label for solely Asian things...

Anyways, I did a search for strange USB drives and found a list here. I am a huge fan of the sushi shaped drives, although a lot of the comments have to do with the Barbie shaped drive.

Thanks to Street Peeper and this image posted from the Streets of Seoul:

I have decided to purchase myself a cute pair of light pink jeans...which I just bought from karmaloop:

I'm excited to totally copy the outfit above- I've already got the black leather coat and white heels, now I need to go buy a white-T... Yes, I know... I don't own a white-T and that's weird. I'm getting one soon- any suggestions on a place to buy a great (not see thru) white-T???

New Shoes!

So since the Spring clothes hit the store floors I've been enraptured with anything in the color orange. The problem: finding the perfect item to purchase in orange... I didn't want to overdo it by acquiring several pieces. Well ladies and gents, I finally purchased my orange item over the weekend.

Uffie Love!

She might be old news to some people, but I was just introduced to her this year and have found a new fave. While there is some controversy surrounding the song "Pop the Glock" (i.e. She didn't write the lyrics or produce the beat and stole them from an 80's band) I still don't mind because:

A) I don't know the other song.
B) I like this one.

Check out a "Pop the Glock" video here. It was created by a fan and is actually really interesting!

We live in a crazy world

Absinthe flavored lollipops? What will we think of next? It apparently uses absinthe that is legal in the States to create the candies.

Brought to you by the same company that makes maple-bacon flavored lollipops.

Don't worry though, these are just the pilot flavors of the company Lollyphile- I wait with bated breath to see what flavors they will bring us next...

Getting Crafty With It

Warm Weather -> Walking -> Checking out Boutiques -> Spending Money -> Having no Money -> Being Inspired to get Crafty

Note: -> means "leads to"

While doing a lot of walking lately I've been seeing some cute fashion (and plenty of not so cute fashion courtesy of the Greek system with its overt use of Greek letters and sweatpants) and who knows, it might be something in the air, but I've been inspired to take a dip into design. I'm going to make a shirt kids. Sure, I have NO clue how to do this but I figure my basic sewing skills I acquired in a Jo-Ann Fabrics class when I was in elementary school (Thanks Mom!) will be just enough to get me by.... with the help of the internet of course.

I will DEFINITELY post my progress once I get started. Plenty of mishaps are sure to ensue to be sure to check back. I might have to wait until I get home and have a sewing machine though, for some reason hand sewing does not seem like a good place for an amateur to start...

I'm Bringing Aprons Back....YEAH!

Just yesterday my mom and I went to a cooking class at Sur La Table in Chicago. The menu included:

  • Miniature Zucchini Pancakes with Asian Dipping Sauce
  • Fontina Fondue with Grappa and Chopped Broccoli
  • Ground Lamb Kebabs with Ginger and Mint Yogurt Sauce
  • Panko Crusted Chicken Cutlets with Arugula Salad

To accompany my new chef-like skills I decided I needed to add a certain chef- like quality to my appearance. Enter Jessie Steele. I love the femininity in her aprons and that I can feel cute, dare I say chic, in an item that many associate with anti-feminism. I cook because I love to, and want to look good doing it. I went for a more sleek look:

I DEFINITELY plan to cook the lamb kebabs with the sauce ASAP (probably while wearing my apron...) Pictures are sure to come!

If you're interested in the recipes feel free to ask.

Cut///Copy = Amazing

So I'm so disappointed that I have been out of the music loop.... why has no one told me about Cut/Copy???

Their new CD is amazing- one of my faves is "Lights and Music." I'm all about the electronic sound meets chill summertime fun. While they may not describe themselves in this manner, I encourage anyone who wants a fun chill vibe to embrace during the summer (and beyond) to check out Cut/Copy.... I'm now a huge fan...

Cut/Copy in Chicago, IL FTW!

Super Pii Pii Brothers!?!?!

Oh Japan, you have outdone yourself this time...

Currently thinkgeek.com is boasting an article entitled "Amazing Virtual Pee Experience from Japan." Apparently the game has a strap on substitute for the male anatomy and you aim and shoot...

What will they think of next???

I think I've just been inspired for my first Root of All Evil poll...

College Moguls Ahead

I came across this web site as my Advanced Org. Comm. teacher droned on about the fact that the middle class is ridiculously predictable (lets be honest, but is anyone going to contest that?)

It sure makes me wonder what I did during the past 4 years. I have been very involved in various organizations, namely Dance2XS UIUC (Youtube Dance2XS- there are amazing dancers involved with the international group) but not to this level. Kudos to them! I wish I had followed through on my laundry service or grocery delivery service ideas. (Who honestly wants to do their laundry or grocery shopping when they don't have a car???)

Bookshelves Can Be Art!

This "bookshelf" (if you can call it that) would look so fresh placed as wall art next to a bed. I think it would really add a fresh new edge to a more modern space.

The Root of All Evil

I've been inspired by Lewis Black's Root of All Evil show on Comedy Central to add my own polls every now and again with my own comparisons. If you have not seen the show, comedians debate (in a 'court-like' setting) about what is the root of all evil. Each week there are two new sides being debated. For example, this week was Dick Cheney vs. Paris Hilton.

So please let me know what you think the root of all evil is in my poll on the right...

  • Fashion
  • Cuisine (personal stories about my dabbling in cooking are sure to ensue)
  • Technology
  • Marketing
  • Dance
  • Humor
